Watercolour by Henry Ludlow c1880 Signed Lady and Gentleman conversing in a garden setting

Watercolour framed and glazed, double mounted measuring 18 x 15cms. The frame measures 43.5 x 35.5cms. A lady and gentleman in conversation in a garden setting. The rackets and dress point to a date in late 1870’s, though probably painted in the early to mid 1880’s. Signed Hal – Henry Ludlow’s diminutive name.

Taken from the printed back information on Burlington Gallery Limited headed paper:

Henry Stephen Ludlow (“Hal”) -Born at Newport in Monmouthshire on 15th January 1861. Ludlow studied at Heatherley’s and Highgate College. He worked in London from 1880 and exhibited at the Royal Institute. New Watercolour Society and in provinces and at the Royal Academy from 1888.

Besides being a portrait and domestic painter, Ludlow was a very competent all round magazine illustrator. His subjects ranged from theatrical sketches to Parliamentary reporting, stories and cattle shows. He was chief cartoonist to “Judy”, 1889-90 and contributed to “The Illustrated London News” and “The Sketch”. He worked at Hanwell, 1902-25.
