    Description

The Lawn Tennis Handbook “Pastime” Series 1894

An early handbook published by “Pastime” Offices 11 & 12 Rose Street London E.C. This soft back has a wonderful advertisement for F.H. Ayres to the rear cover, further ones appear inside by Slazenger and Gradidges. Interestingly an advance in footwear appears in the form of the new steel-point with studs. These shoes from Goodenough’s may be procured in calf or buckskin. This handbook unlike later editions has printed photographs of players of the day. These include Lotty Dodd, Joshua Pimm, Harold Mahony, the Baddeleys, Ernest Lewis, William Renshaw and others in full page oval framed images. Rules and early records are listed together with recognised clubs. Each club is named together with the secretary’s name and address. There is an article in which the demise of the game is refuted and extols the virtues of volleying entitled “The Vogue of the Volley”.

Condition – excellent for its age
