Lawn Tennis – Croquets Racquets & c Illustrated c1880
Probably one of the hardest books to find, referring to the early days of lawn tennis including the hourglass court. Although the author concedes Wingfield introduced lawn tennis to English society – he goes onto strongly denounce that he invented the game. The implements, laws of the game are described in detail. The court of the day is very much to the style of the present day. There is a strong section on croquet and one on badminton. Troco or lawn bowls has a section prior to the last articles on rackets and fives. There are 95 pages interspersed with diagrams and engravings.
Condition – very good for its age. Boards are decorative and in fine condition as is the spine. The pages are complete and are bright. This volume is constructed in part by three central staples. These as per usual have rusted and caused some pages to become loose.
A fabulous early book on the game and related sports, one of Ward and Lock’s Sixpenny Handbooks.
